Rung President and CEO Leslie Gill recently spoke with Megan Lynch on KMOX radio about the concerning widening of the gender wage gap. According to the latest U.S. Census Bureau report, the gap has grown between men and women working full-time—a reversal in progress that hasn’t been seen in 20 years.
“This is why Rung for Women we are investing in training and careers where women have historically been underrrepresented so women can compete in sectors that have been ‘men’s work’,” said Gill.
She pointed out that sectors traditionally associated with women, such as social work, hospitality, and retail, often offer lower pay and have yet to fully recover post-pandemic. This lag, she suggests, is contributing to the widening gap.
Rung is focused on preparing women for careers in fields like technology, geospatial industries, and manufacturing. Gill is optimistic that by training women in these industries, they will be better positioned to compete for higher-paying jobs and help close the wage gap over time.
